Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
