"When are you interviewing Haim?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated fans have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos often feature them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global fan base.

However Haim will forever be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
